The Importance of History

Some people have no interest in knowing the history of how things or entities come to be. One could say I fall into such a category, especially in the world of computers. I did however, find the computing history facts to be fascinating and enjoyable to read. Interestingly enough, I even retained a few facts. Though it was a broad overview, reading the progression from a tabulating machine to help speed up the counting process of the census to essentially having a personal computer in the palm of ones hand is amazing. It has fascinated me to know end the minds of certain people. How an idea turns into a reality which changes the way people view and behave in the world. How people can piggyback off other ideas and either improve it or even create something new. I know my limitations and I certainly do not have a mind for such things but I can appreciate and acknowledge others who do have gifts and talents that change the world. Now whether it has all been for the betterment of mankind, that is a debate for another time.

  1. Glad you found what you read in 1.1.3 A Brief History of Computing fascinating and enjoyable to read and even retained a few facts ^_^

To see where things may go in the future, sometimes it's helpful to see where and how things came to be :-)

  3. Understanding the history of computing is important because it helps us appreciate the evolution of technology and its impact on society, and provides insight into how innovation and progress occur. It also allows us to recognize and appreciate the talents and contributions of individuals who have transformed the world through their ideas and inventions :)

  4. History is essentially a vast collection of case studies of how different people chose to live. If we listen and learn from their stories, we can emulate the actions of those who made good choices while avoiding the mistakes made by others.

  5. I am probably one of the few who are interested in the history of computing. I find it fascinating to see what computers were in the 1990s compared to what they are today.

  6. Hello, it is indeed interesting to be part of a world that is technologically advanced to a high extent. The evolution of computers from helping speed up the process of counting census to providing sophisticated calculations that allow us to accomplish so much is mind blowing. I can relate the invention of computers to airplanes because they allow us to defy the odds and make what was once thought impossible a reality. It is also important to point out how brilliant and creative the human being can be. I hope we find ourselves in the middle of new discoveries in the near future that will revolutionize and benefit our lives greatly.

  7. I think the first people who made the calculator would never imagine that intellectual things in the anime would actually come true nowadays. But it all thanks to the first people.

  8. You should check out "The Imitation Game" if you haven't seen the film! Its a great watch that uses old computers in WW2 and cracking the infamous enigma code. Alan Turing, whom the Turing test is named after is also the person who developed the mentioned test to determine if something is a computer or person! Watch "Ex Machina" if you're interested in that!

  9. Many people are not intrigued by history. They don't seem to get how many ancestors took to make us. Many cannot comprehend that so many intentioned and tries and errors have left us with this moment of high tech. Just been able to comprehend and appreciate that, all this process required to make the life and the universe we conscious being at least for me.

  10. It took millions of ancestors for us to be living this life. So funny that this matches with something that Graham Hancock said in his documentary Ancient Apocalypse-"...as a species with "amnesia," humans have long forgotten what he described as “a lost, advanced civilisation of the ice age". Connecting this to the point that we forget what we were just decades ago, we take things for granted.
